Today You Will Be with Me in Paradise

SUMMARY

This sermon explores Jesus' second statement from the cross, where he promises paradise to a dying criminal. The message emphasizes that Jesus' mission was to seek and save the lost, as demonstrated by his final act of mercy toward an undeserving thief. The sermon contrasts two responses to Jesus on the cross: one criminal who remained rebellious and mocking, and another who repented and asked to be remembered. Jesus' promise of paradise to the repentant thief illustrates that grace is available to anyone who turns to Christ, regardless of their past. The cross becomes a doorway to paradise, not an ending, and demonstrates God's incredible mercy toward sinners.

INTRO PRAYER

Gracious God, as we gather together in this small group, we ask that you open our hearts and minds to what you want to teach us today. Help us to be vulnerable and honest with one another as we explore your Word. May we see ourselves in the story of the thief on the cross and experience afresh your amazing grace. Prepare our hearts to receive whatever you have for us in this time together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  2. What do you think caused the second criminal to have a change of heart toward Jesus?

  3. How does Jesus' mission statement 'to seek out and to save the lost' challenge or encourage you personally?

  4. The sermon mentions that Jesus didn't require a theology exam or baptismal certificate from the thief. What does this teach us about grace?

  5. How can we follow Jesus' example of reaching out to those society considers 'the least, the last, and the lost'?

  6. What does it mean to you that paradise was reopened through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross?

  7. The criminal simply said 'Jesus, remember me.' How might this simple prayer apply to your own relationship with God?

  8. How does this story challenge any preconceptions you might have about who deserves God's grace?

LIFE APPLICATIONS

This week, look for opportunities to show Christ's love and compassion to someone who might be considered an outsider or someone others might overlook. It could be as simple as a kind word, an invitation to coffee, or just taking time to really listen to someone. Ask God to help you see people through His eyes of love and grace.

Loving Father, thank you for the incredible story of grace we've discussed today. Help us to remember that we are all like the thief on the cross - in need of your mercy and forgiveness. May we never forget that your grace is greater than all our sin. As we go from this place, help us to extend that same grace to others, especially those who society might overlook or dismiss. Jesus, remember us as we seek to follow you more closely. In your precious name we pray, Amen.
